As the Politics of Parking research is now finished, I have produced a summary report of my findings which is available to download here:
Politics of Parking summary report
The findings of the report were also covered in a Disability News Service article: Years of scapegoating rhetoric has led to ‘envy and resentment’ of those with blue badges, research finds
This month, I have published two academic journal articles based on the Politics of Parking research. Both papers are open access and free to read.
The first paper focuses on the way we have to manage both our own and others' emotions during accessible parking encounters, and is part of a special issue on disability, affect, and emotion in Frontiers of Sociology journal:
The second paper is specifically about encounters involving 'faking' accusation and explores how these can turn accessible spaces into inaccessible ones. This paper is part of a special issue on the making of disability through encounters in urban spaces, in the Urban Studies journal:
I attended Leeds Disability Conference and presented on my emerging findings, focussing especially on how hierarchies and stereotypes of disability affect who is 'expected' in a Blue Badge bay, and how this stereotype is used to punish and divide us. My slides are publicly available to view here.
In June 2024, I took part in my university's Graduate School research poster competition - the poster is available to view online here.
In May, I also took part in an exhibition called "Enquiring Minds", aimed at turning postgraduate research into interactive exhibits for children between 7-11. My exhibit was a "Choose-your-own-adventure" story illustrating the physical and emotional energy that it takes to navigate public space as a disabled person. Here is a Tweet with photos of my exhibit.
On 7 Feb 2024, I presented my emerging findings from my survey and content analysis at the BSC Hate Crime Network discussion group. A captioned recording is available here on Youtube.
The report summarising the findings from the survey with Blue Badge holders is now freely available - click here to download the full report.
The survey for Blue Badge holders about encounters they have experienced closed today. I have had an amazing response with over 300 people completing the survey! I will not start analysing the data and will publish a report based on the data in Autumn 2023. Watch this space!
I spoke to the lovely Alice and Lucy from LAbled disability podcast about my research and all things Blue Badge parking. Listen to the episode on Spotify here or read more about it on the LAbled website.
The latest Politics of Parking newsletter is now available here
Please keep checking back here for regular updates about the project. I am currently awaiting ethics approval and will launch my survey once I have received it. I am hoping this will be in January or February 2023. If you want to take part, don't forget to sign up for project updates so you will be notified when the survey goes live.
